SERTOMANS IN THE NEWS

The Train! The Train!
"Frisco 4500 Meteor"
Our Sertomans, led by Mike Massey, Ed Massey and Bob Schwarz, have accomplished something that many could only dream of.  They turned a pile of rusted parts into a beautiful reminder of our past.  Thanks everyone who made this possible.

TRAIN RESTORATION AND PARK

Mike Massey, Bob Schwarz, and Benny Leonard have almost completed the preparation of the Murray Hill Passenger Car and Frisco Caboose.  The passenger car and caboose have been lettered, thanks to TSU Railway, who supplied the painters Kenneth Hollingshead and Darrell Craig.

On Sunday, May 2, 2010 the Sertoma Restoration Team gathered with BNSF and SKOAL railway crews to move the 4500 to its waiting area in the Holly Refinery siding.

It will make the next move to the Route 66 Station Village park under the power of the Sapulpa Union Railway and Burlington Northern employees and retirees.

SOUTHWEST CHAMBER HOUSE
Townwest Sertoma members continue work on the “Chamber House” project.  Roy Heim (project manager) and Sherry Heim met the surveyor and completed the field work for the property survey on July 16th.  The primer paint coat is almost finished on the outside and final colors are selected. The main color will be Smoke Mist, with an off-white trim.  Fabulous Red is the accent color for the doors and some select trim. Valspar regional representative Jim Richey is going to supply the paint for the house.  Lowe's Tulsa Hills Store Manager Andy Schweizer will be assisting with materials when possible.

Mike Massey was selected as the Townwest Sertoman of the Month of March. Mike has completed a giant Sertoma project on the restoration of the Frisco 4500 engine for Southwest Tulsa.  He has been working on this project for many years.  The engine is now at the Holly Refinery in West Tulsa.  Mike has also been there for all of the fundraisers,

February 2010 Club Sertoman
Board members selected a reluctant Randy McGoffin as the Townwest Sertoma Club Sertoman of the Month.  That is not unusual for Randy, who prefers to work in the background on most things.  In fact, the board members thought he has been the backbone of the club form many years!  He has done an outstanding job of keeping up the extensive books and paperwork involved in club activities.  He has been a positive motivator and active participant in nearly every part of the club operation.

January 2010 Club Sertoman

Congratulations to Sherry Heim, Sertoman of the Month of January. Sherry serves as President-Elect and has served on several committees this year. President Ed Massey and Chair Sue Massey expressed their appreciation to Sherry for taking over the meetings while Ed was recuperating from knee replacement surgery.  Sherry also does the club newsletter and volunteers for committees and projects.

December 2009 Club Sertoman
Addie Harmon was selected by the board as Townwest Sertoman for the month of December.  Addie has been Vice-President for Programs, doing an excellent job of collecting program ideas for members.  She has been very involved in the planning and operation of fundraising yard sales.  Her enthusiastic support of members in sponsorship and fundraising makes her the ideal choice for this month's recognition.

November 2009 Club Sertoman
Dr. Michael Taylor has been named the Townwest Sertoman of the month for November.  Dr. Taylor is the only active Charter Member for Townwest.  He joined the club as an Ambassador from the Southside Sertoma Club in 1981 when the club was formed.  Dr. Taylor has presented many interesting programs, supported sponsorships, worked fundraisers and has been an active member of the SHOP Board for many years.

October 2009 Club Sertoman

Marilyn Massey for being named for Sertoman of the month for October 2009.  Marilyn has not missed any meetings in over a year; has taken vacation days to help with the 4 June yard sales; has helped with the Christmas yard sale; she helped with the last two block parties; has helped with the Red Fork Main Street clean up days twice; she has served on our board of directors; she is currently taking care of our club scrapbook; in the past she has represented our club at District, Regional and International Conventions.

September 2009 Club Sertoman
Bob Schwarz was named September 2009 Townwest Sertoman.  Bob found the Townwest Sertoma Club Frisco 4500 project here on our website through the Internet.  He visited the club and joined after finding that the club was very active.  Active is the word that describes Bob best.  He has already worked countless hours in restoring the 4500, Murray Hill, and Drover's Caboose.  He has participated in most club activities since joining.

August 2009 Club Sertoman
Pam Burgess was named August 2009 Club Sertoman.  President Ed Massey cited Pam's work with the SERTEEN Club, Law Awards Banquet, Club Projects and recent contribution of the "Townwest Sertoma Club at Work" banner.

July 2009 Club Sertoman

Roy Heim was named July 2009 Club Sertoman.  President Ed Massey cited Roy's work on the Fall District Conference in October, work on the Sertoma project to assist the Southwest Tulsa Community Chamber with the Chamber House and keeping the Townwest Sertoma website up to date.

Outgoing President Sue Massey started a monthly recognition program for club members in June 2009.  The first club award winner for June 2009 is Susan Reynolds.  Susan was recognized for her work as SERTEEN Coordinator, SHARP Representative, Law Enforcement Awards Program work, Membership Recruitment efforts and Program development.

 TOWNWEST SERTOMA HISTORY
The Townwest Sertoma Club was formed June 30, 1981 as a sponsorship of the Southside Sertoma Club. Larry Coulson, former Tulsa Police and Fire Commissioner, was Southside Sertoma’s club building chairman in 1981 and was a key figure in the formation of the club. The club’s name was linked to the Townwest area of Southwest Tulsa like many of the other Sertoma clubs in the nation. The club was incorporated on September 2, 1981

MEMBERSHIP
Membership in the club is open to anyone interested in helping others through hands on projects and sponsorships. The local Sertoma clubs are part of an international organization with general headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. In the United States are regions and smaller groups of clubs, each with elected officers.

MEETINGS
Club meetings are held once a week at a local restaurant. The longest series of meetings was 13 years at Ollie’s Station Restaurant. Other westside restaurants have also hosted the club for shorter periods of time. Current meetings are held each Wednesday morning from 7:00 to 8:00 at Ollie’s Station Restaurant 4070 Southwest Boulevard. Each week the club hears speakers about topics of interest, conducts business and works on sponsorships to help in the community. Financing of the sponsorships is done through fundraising projects throughout the year.

BERRYHILL SCHOOLS ADOPTION
Berryhill Public Schools was adopted by the club. One of the more successful activities in the school has been a youth group called “Serteens” that follows the same guiding principles of the regular Sertoma Clubs.

LAW ENFORCEMENT AWARDS
The Townwest Club has held a banquet since 1989 to honor Tulsa County Deputies, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troopers from Troop B and 911 Emergency Telecommunicators from the Tulsa area Emergency Communications Center.

SPONSORSHIPS
Sponsorship projects are funded by money raised in an annual garage sale, a Spring bike tour, a few merchandise selling programs and some advertising in the Law Awards banquet program. Money raised in the fundraising goes back to the club to sponsor ongoing projects and special community needs.
